FACTICIUS
24.03.-30.04.2016

The title „FACTITIUS“ means false idols but it also has roots in the word fetishism. A word familiar in the gay fetish scene. This explanation is the only objective reflection that exists in Michael Sayles' installation. Here Michael Sayles has made a mask that delivers us into an african ideal where "Masks are not representations of spirits but the means through which spirits manifest themselves. They embody supernatural powers that are required to be present at every important event and when social control is exercised." By covering the interior space of the display window he has created a warm and yet rough ambience using sackcloth. The appearance of the mask is both a hommage to the creativity and ingenuity of african antiquity and a precise expression of the artist aspirations in our technological society. The use of the everyday objects on the mask is the way the artist determines the Zeitgeist, linking the past with the present and our public and private spaces.
