Für ihre Ausstellung bei SOX nimmt Miriam Böhm den “White Cube” des Ausstellungsfensters zum Motiv. Steht die Bezeichnung des „weißen Würfels“ sonst für weitgehend neutrale, unauffällige Ausstellungsräume, deren Architektur sich den Exponaten möglichst unterordnet, so ist dieses Verhältnis im Schaufenster an der Oranienstrasse grundlegend verschieden: Das Fenster fungiert nicht nur als Ausstellungsfläche, sondern macht eben den Akt des Ausstellens zum Thema – es wird, wie Mel Bochner im Zusammenhang mit seinem Film „New York Windows“ (1966) sagte, zur „Metapher für Selbstreflexivität“. Eine selbstreflexive Haltung prägt auch die Arbeiten von Miriam Böhm. In ihren sachlich anmutenden Fotografien finden sich sonst vielfach gestaffelte, räumlich verunklärte Bildebenen, die in ihrer perspektivischen Konstruktion das Betrachterauge irritieren. In „White Cube“ fallen jedoch Bild und Motiv, Repräsentation und Rahmen gleichsam in eins. Das Fenster wird zum Bild, und das Bild als Projektionsfläche gerät in eine Schieflage.

For her exhibition at SOX, Miriam Böhm takes the ‘white cube’ of the exhibition space as a motif. Yet, while the notion of the white cube is, in general, linked to the idea of a neutral and supportive exhibition structure, it takes a rather different turn at SOX. As a shop window, the space not only serves as a display for presentation, but refers to the very act of showing. It becomes, as Mel Bochner puts it in regards to his 1966 movie, “New York Windows”, “a metaphor for self-reflexivity”. Self-reflexivity is also at play in Miriam Böhm’s work. Her photographs suggest a somewhat objective approach. Still, they often appear as three-dimensional arrangements of pictures-within-pictures, evoking a rather puzzling effect. In Böhm’s photographic work for SOX, then, the image and the motif, the act of representation and its framing seem to coincide: The window becomes a picture, and the picture seems to slip, right in front of us.Kassandra Nakas
