The Incomplete Man ist der Titel eines Farbfeldsystems, in welchem sich drei jeweils aus einer Folge von Farbfeldern bestehenden Permutationen überlagern. Dieses Farbfeldsystem ist eine Übersetzung einer dem griechischen Physiker und Philosoph Galen (129-216 nach Chr.) zugeschriebenen Taxonomie. Er glaubte fest an das Verfahren des Aderlasses oder Phlebotomie (med.), der chirurgischen Öffnung oder des Durchstechens einer Ader um Blut zu entnehmen oder eine Flüssigkeit einzuführen, was Teil des historischen Verfahrens war.
Galen folgte der Theorie Aristoteles von den vier Gemütsverfassungen, die davon ausgeht, der menschliche Körper sei aus einer Balance der vier Elemente zusammengesetzt und ein gesund funktionierender Zustand des Körpers müsse eine gleichwertige Balance aller vier Elemente beinhalten: Erde-Feuer, Erde, Wasser und Luft, die sich im Körper entsprechend als gelbe Galle, schwarze Galle, Wasser und Schleim manifestierten. Wie der Titel „The incomplete Man“ suggeriert, fehlt eine vierte Permutation; das System bleibt unvollkommen und verortet den Mensch demnach in einem Zustand der inneren Aufruhr und Unausgeglichenheit.
Die Arbeit besteht aus verschieden farbigen, transparenten Folien, die direkt auf die Glasscheibe der Vitrine angebracht sind. Von hinten beleuchtet, tritt das Farbfeld zur Straße hin in Erscheinung.

The Incomplete Man is the title given to a colour field system where three permutations of a series of coloured blocks overlap. The colour field system is a translation of a taxonomy attributed to Galen (circa AD 129-199). The ancient physician and philosopher of Greek origin was a strong believer in the practice of venesection or medical term phlebotomy, the surgical opening or puncture of a vein in order to withdraw blood or introduce a fluid, which historically was part of the procedure of letting blood. Galen adopted Aristotle’s theory of the four humours. It states that the body is composed of a balance of the four elements and that for the body to be in a healthy functioning state, must contain an equal balance of each: Earth-fire, earth, water and air, which were manifested in the body as yellow bile, black bile, water and phlegm respectively. As the title of the Incomplete Man suggests, a fourth permutation is missing, rendering the system incomplete, thus placing man in a state of inner turmoil and out of balance within himself.
The piece is presented by applying transparent coloured filters directly onto the window pane of the SOX Schaufenster, which is lit from behind illuminating the colour field to the street.
